Vertebroplasty & Kyphoplasty

Vert & KyphoVertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty are used to treat compression fractures in the spine. A compression fracture occurs when pressure on a vertebra causes it to break or crack. Compression fractures are often extremely painful, and can cause abnormal spine curvature that leads to other serious health problems. Vertebroplasty stabilizes compression fractures in the spine. Bone cement is injected into back bones (vertebrae) that have cracked or broken, often because of osteoporosis or other disease processes. The cement hardens, stabilizing the fractures and supporting the patient’s spine.

In Kyphoplasty, a balloon is first inserted into the fractured bone through the hollow needle to create a cavity or space. The cement is injected into the cavity once the balloon is removed.

San Diego Imaging interventional radiologists provide Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty procedures in a comfortable and convenient outpatient setting at our Kearny Mesa center, as well as at various hospital affiliates.
